Flash vs HTML5

     Adobe Flash is multimedia software used to add animation, video, and interactive elements to Web pages. Flash use vector and raster graphic images to provide animation of text, drawings, and still images.

     I am not a flash lover. I prefer Photoshop, Illustrator, and After Effects. I have been working in Flash daily for the last 5 years as digital animator. What can I say? In my opinion it is powerful product with many great tool and options. What is really amazes me in Flash is the ability to create vector base graphic and the way of animation. Especially now when Flash become a part of Adobe Professional Package. Now Flash is more adaptive to the Illustrator base graphic. If I need to create detailed multilayered vector graphic first I will make precise layout in Illustrator and then import it to Flash. In Flash I will turn graphic element into movie clips and animate them. Why I am telling this? I just want to explain that in my opinion Flash is a good software package and I like to use it in the future. I compare Flash with huge battleship or aircraft carrier. Of course small destroyer or submarine could launch a torpedo and sinks this magnificent ship but destroyer or submarine will never win a war because they don’t have big guns. Only big gun can destroy enemy armies on the land. The same situation with is Flash. May be Flash is not such agile and fast as a new Apple software packages but it is robust, solid and powerful graphic program and I like to use it.

     Reading these articles I understood there is a big controversy between Flash and HTML 5. HTML5 is next major revision of the HTML standard for structuring and presenting content on the Web. One of critical issue is that these new standards incorporate features like video playback and drag-and-drop that have been previously dependent on third-party browser plug-ins such as Adobe Flash.

     Flash is a closed system and only Adobe has authority for this product. In contract HTML, CSS, Java Script are open software. Anyone could use these tools for creation web graphics, animation clips, typography etc. These new standards are now widely available on the web. For example Adobe created Web Kit that was adopted for Blackberry, Android, Palm, Nokia. These new standards demonstrate one of the Flash weakiest side. In many satiations web developers don’t need Flash anymore. There are many other high quality open software packages for creation web pages, video, banners, intractive elements.

    The most serious problem that Flash products such as games, video, banners are not compatible with portable Apple devices. This situation highlights that Flash originally design for PC and don’t performed well on mobile touch screens products that use fingers instead traditional mouse. It crashes. Of course in situation like this Apple tries to protect its products and doesn’t allow Flash on IPhone, Ipod, or Ipad.

    It looks like a war. Flash tries to keep its place like third party software for creation web animation, interactive screens, banners, web pages. Now Flash became a cross platform development tool. It stays between the web platform and the developers. In contrast Apple tries to eliminate this third element and create advanced and innovative software for creating new on line applications without using transitional plug-ins element. Of course Apple is right in this way to adopt its product to HTML5 web technology.

This situation is bad for the Flash because it isn’t well adopted software for the new HTML5 based platform.
